What is a specific learning disorder?

A learning disorder is a condition that affects the way an individual understands, processes, or communicates information. It can manifest itself as difficulty understanding or using verbal language, difficulty with math and numbers, difficulty with writing, or difficulty with reading comprehension.

Learning disorders can be divided into three main categories: reading, written expression, and mathematics.

  • Reading disorders, also known as dyslexia, affect how people understand written words. People with this condition may have difficulty recognizing letters and their associated sounds or interpreting the meaning of words.
  • Written expression disorders, also known as dysgraphia, impact a person’s ability to express their thoughts in writing. This involves difficulties with grammar, spelling, and handwriting. Our practice can not only diagnose dysgraphia, but also tell you why you’re having difficulty (e.g., motor skills deficits, dyslexia-related, or ADHD/executive functioning-related).
  • Finally, mathematics disorders, also known as dyscalculia, can make it hard for people to understand numbers and perform basic math operations. It can also affect a person’s ability to think logically about math problems or interpret mathematical symbols and equations. In some cases, people may have difficulty with more than one of these areas.

It is important to note that these areas of difficulty can be mild, moderate, or severe.

Diagnosing a learning disorder is important in order to receive the help and support needed for successful educational development. When a learning disorder is accurately identified, tailored strategies can be put into place to make academic tasks easier and more manageable. Additionally, diagnosis can provide access to services such as specialized tutoring or accommodations that may not otherwise be available. With the help of a diagnosis and the right resources, individuals can learn how to cope with their learning disorder and take steps toward meeting their educational goals.

Diagnosing a learning disorder also reduces feelings of insecurity or guilt over academic struggles. By recognizing that there is an underlying cause for difficulties in school, individuals are better able to understand why certain tasks are more challenging. This can reduce stigma and help individuals feel supported in their academic pursuits.

At Huntington Psychological Services, we take a comprehensive approach to diagnosing learning disorders. We use a variety of tools and methods to thoroughly assess each individual, including cognitive assessments, standardized achievement tests, review of academic records, questionnaires, rating scales, and interviews with family. We then analyze the results of these tests in order to determine if there are any differences between the child’s performance and their expected level of functioning. Once we have gathered enough data, we can make an accurate diagnosis and provide treatment recommendations, referrals, and a comprehensive written report.
